grandMA3 programmer

I programme MA Lighting consoles for live shows — grandMA2 since 2015 and MA3 since 2020. Touring, London venues, corporate events and esports: building the show file, pre-visualising it before load-in, and running it or handing it to the crew.

shows and venues

  • Lorde — Solar Power tour, 2022
  • Esports World Cup 2026, Paris — assisting on the lighting programming for Stage 3, with Vision Factory
  • London venues including indigo at The O2, Troxy, HERE at Outernet, O2 Academy Brixton, Ministry of Sound, Heaven and Electric Brixton
  • Corporate and private events — shows for Immersive Cult in London members' clubs including 5 Hertford Street, and private experiential parties

how I build a grandMA3 show

grandMA3 isn't a grandMA2 with a new screen. A show built the MA2 way on MA3 hardware runs, but it works against the console, and it gets harder to change the closer you get to the show. I build with the MA3 tools: recipes, so a look is made from a selection, values and MAtricks and can be rebuilt when the rig changes; selection-grid programming for pixel, position and effect work; and timecode-driven sequences where the show is locked to playback.

The point is a show file that someone else can open, understand and run — a touring crew, a house LD, or me again in six months.

MA2 to MA3 conversion

If you have a grandMA2 show that now has to run on grandMA3, I convert it and then rework whatever doesn't carry across cleanly, rather than handing back an MA2 show running in MA3 clothing. Having programmed both for years, I know where the two disagree.

pre-visualisation

a pre-vis suite in Berkshire

20 minutes from Heathrow and the Elizabeth line. Depence and Capture on dedicated visualisation machines (NVIDIA RTX 4000 Ada and RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell), with drawings in Vectorworks Spotlight. Most of a show can be built and checked here before load-in, which shortens tech time and moves the expensive mistakes to a cheaper day.

Both machines can also be hired: the Capture Symphony visualiser and the Depence visualiser.

lighting and video together

I also own and programme disguise and Resolume servers. Where lighting and video share a show — timecode, content-driven cues, pixel-mapped fixtures and LED — I can build both sides, or sit between the two departments and get them working to the same clock.

consoles available

The consoles I programme on are available to hire: grandMA3 light, grandMA3 compact XT, grandMA3 PU M and a grandMA3 Viz Key — on their own, or with me. See grandMA3 hire.

common questions

Do you programme grandMA2 as well as grandMA3?

Yes. I have programmed grandMA2 since 2015 and grandMA3 since 2020, and plenty of venues and tours still run MA2.

Can you convert our grandMA2 show to grandMA3?

Yes. I convert the show file and then rework what doesn't translate cleanly, so it behaves like an MA3 show rather than an MA2 show on MA3 hardware.

Can the show be pre-programmed before load-in?

Yes — that is what the pre-vis suite is for. I work in Depence or Capture in Berkshire, 20 minutes from Heathrow and the Elizabeth line. Send the plot, the rig and the running order, and most of the programming can be done before anyone is on site.

Can you supply the console?

Yes. grandMA3 light, compact XT, PU M and a Viz Key are available through hireJG, with or without me programming. There is no requirement to hire kit to book programming, or the other way round.

Do you work on shows with video?

Yes. I own and programme disguise and Resolume servers, so I can build both sides of a show that shares timecode and cues between lighting and video.

Do you travel?

Yes. My pre-vis suite is in Berkshire, and I work across the UK and abroad — most recently Paris for the Esports World Cup.
